For many seniors in Price it will soon be back to the classroom. According to Viki Bowman, director of the senior citizen’s center, CEU will be expanding their continuing education program into the senior center. Bowman explained that coordinator of the CEU continuing education program, Jim Huffaker, has received a grant to begin classes at the senior center. The three year program should begin within the next couple months, but will start for sure by the first of the year, according to Bowman.
“We are amazed at the response,” said Bowman, “they are really excited, especially with the computer classes and the estate planning program.” Other classes they are considering include genealogy, oil painting, nutrition and fitness.
Back in June the Sun Advocate ran a story in the senior focus section announcing that the number of frauds and scams affecting seniors was on the rise. Bowman has been advised recently that there are a number of phone solicitors and door-to-door salespeople who are targeting seniors. She reminds people to be aware of these and be extremely carefully when investing, buying or supporting unknown organizations.
“My first advice is to never donate over the phone, ” cautions Bowman. “The second bit of advice is just because someone comes to the door with a nice suit on, that doesn’t mean they represent the homeowners best interests.”
Solicitors often prey on unsuspecting elderly people. Bowman also recommends never to give a credit card number over the phone.
The local senior program is also planning a trip to the opera. On Sept. 19, a group will travel to the Scera Shell amphitheater in Orem to see Evita.
Another embroidered greeting card class, taught by Helen Priano is scheduled for October 3at the Price center.
The fall bazaar season is almost here. The bazaar in Price is set for Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the bazaar in East Carbon will take place at their senior center is set for Nov. 9, also from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Both bazaars will feature baked goods, crafts, jewelry, quilts, crocheted items and ceramics. This is also when the semi-annual fund raising project takes place. The winner will be selected at the East Carbon bazaar.
