The Helper Junior High basketball teams hosted the San Rafael Bulldogs Jan. 10. The games marked the beginning of a strongly competitive season for both teams.
The afternoon began with the boys varsity teams hitting the floor for competition.
The game was highly contested as both teams fought for control of the game. The Helper Rams however, walked away victorious against a strong Bulldog team by the final score of 74-66.
The Rams Jeremy Barker boosted the teams points by shooting 9-11 from the free throw line, while Tyler Nelsen played strong against the Bulldogs.
Rams teammate Joe Via had an incredible second half, along with Dustin Howa who scored a three point field goal in the fourth quarter.
Howa, along with the rest of the bench players boosted the Rams ahead of the Bulldogs and was a main factor in the Rams win Thursday.
Athletic director for Helper Junior High, coach Phil Howa felt that the varsity team did extremely well against the talented San Rafael team.
“I think that the team put forth a good effort. The bench contributed well and held their own against the Bulldog team,” commented Howa.
After the boys varsity team was finished on the court, the girls varsity team ran out on the floor full of enthusiasm.
Unfortunately, the enthusiasm did not last long. The girls found themselves down 8-36 at the half, and eventually losing 33-60 against the Bulldogs.
Although the girls struggled with turnovers, the team did not give up on itself. The girls played competitively throughout the game, despite the overwhelming defeat.
Rams guard Tabby Cummins lead the team in scoring with 10 points, while Amie Stewart followed in scoring with eight points.
Crystal Legarda also contributed to the team in scoring, rebounding, and steals. Legarda’s strong play along with her determination carried over to the remainder of the team, even through its shortcomings.
After the devastating loss endured by the varsity girls, the junior varsity boys hit the hardwood floor. The boys also suffered a loss by the score of 54-22.
The junior varsity girls then competed against the Bulldogs. In this match up, the Rams also suffered a loss, but they held the Bulldogs to a 30-13 victory.
Danille Martino and Kristine Marsing lead the Rams in scoring, with each player scoring 6 points against the Bulldogs.
The girls team understands the obstacles they must overcome including, mainly turnovers. The team will continue to grow and improve throughout the season and has a good chance of becoming a highly competitive team in the region. The varsity boys intend to continue playing strong throughout the season.
While improvements are being made to the teams, determination and enthusiasm for the game remains, which is a key factor to any great sporting team.
