In September of the current school year the schools of Carbon and Emery counties were asked to participate in both a national and local essay contest sponsored by WAAIME (Women’s Auxiliary to the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers).
Now, several months later, the local chapter of WAAIME have been informed that five of our local schools participated in the national contest, and we have six student winners. These students will have their essays published in WAAIME International Essay Booklet which is sent worldwide to all WAAIME chapters. Some are as far away as Mexico, Russia and Peru.
The five schools competing nationally were Creekview Elementary, Pinnacle Canyon Academy, Westridge Middle School, Castle Heights Elementary, and Castle Dale Elementary.
These schools have each received $750 in earth science materials from the local WAAMIE chapter for their participation. The six individual students with essays being published in the international booklet are, Cameron Hanson and Kylie Pierce of Mrs. Sandy Bertola’s class at Pinnacle Canyon Academy, Daniel Housekeeper of Miss Emily Kofford’s class at Pinnacle Canyon Academy, Mario Trejo of Mrs, Carol Thayn’s class at Creekview Elementary, Bobbie Campbell of Mrs. Sue Olsen’s class at Westridge Middle School, and Jade Fielder of Mr. James Prettyman’s class at Castle Dale Elementary.
Each of these classrooms will receive an additional $125 from the national WAAIME organization to purchase additional earth science materials, and each national student winner will receive a $25 cash prize.
