Pintail duck harvest restricted

By Sun Advocate

Duck hunters are reminded that pintails may not be taken in Utah from Nov. 8 through Dec. 24. Utah’s pintail season will resume Dec. 25 and continue until the state’s 2002-2003 waterfowl season ends on Jan. 18, 2003.
“Pintail numbers have remained low over the past decade and the number of pintails hatched and successfully raised this past spring was down from the previous year,” explained Tom Aldrich, waterfowl coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources.
“Because of that, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has shortened pintail seasons across the country this year.”
States in the Pacific Flyway were granted a 60-day pintail season, which is the longest in the country.
“After receiving comments from the public and the division, the Utah Wildlife Board decided to split Utah’s 60-day season and provide the state’s hunters with early and late season pintail hunting opportunities,” Aldrich said.
“The first part of the pintail season ends Nov. 7, but Christmas holiday and late season hunters can hunt pintails again, beginning Dec. 25.”
For more information call the nearest DWR office about the specifics.
