| The Carbon High track and field team had a successful state track meet this past weekend. The boys team finished in twelfth place while the girls finished in thirteenth place amoungst the 23 schools that competed in the region 3A championships. |
The main event for high school track and field athletes was held May 10-11 at BYU. The meet was for the state championships and was held under an overcast with rain off and on throughout the day.
The weather did not dampen the mood for the Carbon High Dinos who fared quite well against 3A teams from across the state.
Scott Terry led the Carbon boys team by finishing sixth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:56.37. Terry then moved on to finish in fifth place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:35.07.
Terry who was on top of his game at the state meet also finished in fifth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.65. Terry’s races were all close, especially for the third to eighth place finishes. In fact, only hundreds of a second separated third to eighth place in Terry’s events.
Cody Butler stepped up his performance in the 3200 meter run a couple of notches to be a strong competitor in the event. Butler worked hard and stayed with the pack. The strong showing proved successful with Butler finishing in fifth place in the event with a time of 9:55.70. Butler was also the only boy from Carbon to receive all-state academic honors in track and field.
Also in the 3200 meter run, Isaac Goodrich ran a personal best time at the state event with a time of 10:22.80, landing him a twelfth place finish.
In the boys 800 meter run, Seth Marsing ran with Terry and the rest of the pack until the final 100 meters. At this point, Marsing found himself completing the race in ninth place with a time of 2:03.45.
Marsing also came back to help the medley relay team pace eighth by running another 800 meters. Then, for his final run, Marsing anchored the 4×400 meter relay team to a sixth place finish in the finals. The remainder of the medley team consisted of T.J. Potts, Matt Hough, and Joe Palmer while the 4×400 team consisted of Terry, Palmer, Butler, and Marsing.
To round out the boys events, Lee Prettyman finished the medal race with a sixth place finish in the javelin with a toss of 153 feet.
The girls also had a strong performance at the state meet. The team was lead by Melanie Madsen who ran a personal best time of 11:54.80 in the 3200 meter run and a 5:37 in the 1600 meter event. Madsen placed ninth in both races with the girls in fourth through ninth places finishing only seconds apart.
Alicia Torres and Jessica Serfustini placed fifth and sixth in the girls high jump event.
Becky Unsworth broke into the medal round by throwing the discus 104 feet, while Emily Rice placed sixth in the javelin. Both girls have been quite competitive this year, as well as Serfustini and Torres in the high jump competition.
Brittany Polastro was the final point-getter in the girls team. Polastro placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 32 feet, seven inches.
The boys team finished in twelfth place and the girls team in thirteenth place out of 23 teams in the 3A division. The strong finish served as the final successful meet for this years Dino track and field team who have out done themselves this season. The Carbon coaches are proud for the accomplishments the team has made this year and look forward to next season which should be just as good for the strong team.
