Early voting for the general municipal and special general elections gets underway Tuesday, October 24 at the Carbon County Administration building at 751 East 100 North in Price. Early voting will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through November 2, and from 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m. on November 3.
Carbon County Clerk/Auditor Seth Oveson said there have been several requests to keep the polls open later than in past elections so that early voters can cast their ballot after getting off work.
On Thursday Oveson conducted a demonstration of the testing done for the election equipment, following a checklist to make sure the electronic voting machines are working correctly.
Testing on the Diebold Ballot Stations included recalibrating every machine screen; checking the printers, speakers and headphones; double-checking the software and firmware, and checking off the security key or password.
Also as part of the testing, a ballot is loaded into the machine and a report is printed. Oveson said this is something the poll workers do on the morning of the election to make sure each ballot station is programed right.
Oveson noted the ballots are stored in two ways: on the software or memory card, and on a paper or hard copy as a backup if needed. He stressed that since there is no internet connection, there is no way the system could be hacked.
Oveson said, “the records from our test are required by the state and so we keep them for every machine that we’ve done.”
In order to cast an early ballot, voters should be registered on or before October 23 and will need to show a photo I.D. or two different forms of identification that show name and current address.
