The Price City Police Department has issued a reminder to all citizens, particularly parents, to properly secure firearms following an incident that caused a public alarm on September 12.
Police were dispatched to Pioneer Park on a report that a man was using a gun to threaten others. Sgt. Kelly Maynes arrived at the scene and detained a person of interest, but no firearm was immediately located.
It was learned that other persons of interest were driving around the park area and when the suspect vehicle was stopped by Det. Dave Wilkinson, three passengers bolted. The male juvenile driver and another passenger remained and a loaded semi-automatic handgun was located in the vehicle.
According to a news release from the Price Police Department, officers determined the handgun belonged to the driver’s parent and was allegedly taken without the parent’s knowledge or permission. The juvenile admitted showing it off to friends at the park, but denied threatening anyone with the weapon.
Price City information technology personnel provided security video which confirmed the juvenile did not threaten anyone with the handgun.
The news release said the adult male initially contacted at the park was issued a citation for Disorderly Conduct for creating a public alarm. The male juvenile was referred to juvenile court for Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Minor and Disorderly Conduct and was released to his parent.
It was determined that the male who remained in the vehicle did not have any involvement. He was released, but the adult male and female who bailed from the vehicle and fled were arrested booked into jail for Failure to Stop at the Command of a Police Officer, a Class A Misdemeanor. The juvenile female who also fled was referred to juvenile court for the same offense.
The names of the adults involved were not released because of ongoing investigations related to other cases.
