Helper Police have seized a significant amount of heroin from an Amtrak train, apparently left behind or abandoned by a passenger. Police Chief Trent Anderson said a package containing two ounces of China White, a rare form of the drug, was taken from the train as it was stopped at the Helper Depot Monday night. He said the drug is much more potent than the more common brown heroin, and was packaged in “bindles,” of paper.
Chief Anderson said the conductor on the train notified police after a worker cleaning a sleeper car found the narcotics in a fake soda can. The person who occupied the car had been arrested on unknown charges and taken from the train in Illinois, but the contraband was not found at that time. Helper Police are trying to contact the arresting law enforcement agency to coordinate further investigation and added charges.
In the past, China White was typically thought to be a pure form of heroin, but has since come to refer to heroin that has been mixed with fentanyl, which may be hundreds of times more potent than street heroin. Fentanyl tends to produce significantly more respiratory depression, making it much more dangerous to users than heroin.
