As a former faculty member at CEU (1960s), and married to a wonderful wife from Carbon County, I hold some empathy for what the columnist seems to feel about about the USU-USU Eastern partnership.
The USU land grant mission seems a good fit for southeastern Utah. Enrollment and growth in the region remain as critical determinants.
Leadership conducive to forging a strong sense of allegiance between the two schools calls for steady cultivation, something I interpret coming from Mr Piacitelli’s opinion. A community (or area) college offers many advantages to a population within its reach, but must posses a degree of local autonomy and incentive. As for growth comparisons to southwest Snow College, demographics and overall economic variables make comparisons difficult to equate.
My wife and I owe much to Carbon County and to then “CEU”, its student body, faculty associates, and the community at large. The ethnic, religious, and political mix offered an invigorating climate for personal growth and cultural interaction.
